About Yogurt, plain, whole milk

Yogurt is a creamy, tangy dairy food made by fermenting milk with live bacterial cultures, which turn its natural sugar, lactose, into lactic acid and give yogurt its thick texture and signature tartness. It comes in many styles, from thin, pourable drinking yogurt to thick, protein-rich Greek yogurt and Icelandic skyr, both strained of much of their watery whey. Made most often from cow milk, though also from goat, sheep, or plant milks like soy, oat, and coconut, it is a good source of protein, calcium, and probiotics, the beneficial live cultures often linked to digestive health, and the fermentation leaves it lower in lactose than milk.

Plain yogurt is wonderfully versatile, eaten with fruit, honey, and granola, blended into smoothies, whisked into sauces, dips, and marinades, or used in place of cream or sour cream. Flavored and sweetened versions are popular too, though they can carry a lot of added sugar. Look for labels listing live and active cultures, and keep yogurt refrigerated, stirring back any natural liquid on top.
