About Eggnog
Eggnog is a rich, sweet dairy drink traditionally served around the winter holidays. This is the non-alcoholic, ready-to-drink version made from milk, cream, sugar and eggs, often seasoned with nutmeg or vanilla — a far more substantial drink than any soda.
Per 100 grams it provides about 88 calories, 4.6 grams of protein, 4.2 grams of fat (2.6 grams saturated), 8 grams of carbohydrate (all sugar) and 59 milligrams of cholesterol, with a useful 130 milligrams of calcium and 165 milligrams of potassium from the dairy. A half-cup serving (124 grams) comes to about 109 calories, 10 grams of sugar and 73 milligrams of cholesterol; a full cup roughly doubles that to around 218 calories and 146 milligrams of cholesterol.
Unlike a soda, eggnog brings real protein and calcium, but it is also high in sugar, saturated fat and cholesterol, so it is best enjoyed in small servings as a seasonal treat. Commercial eggnog is pasteurized and safe to drink; traditional homemade versions made with raw eggs carry a salmonella risk and should use pasteurized eggs. Many people also add spirits, which adds alcohol and extra calories on top.
