About Malt beverage

This is a non-alcoholic malt beverage — the dark, sweet, carbonated drink sold under names like Malta, brewed from barley malt and hops much like beer but stopped short so almost no alcohol forms (only a trace, under 0.5%). It has a deep molasses-and-malt flavor that is popular across the Caribbean and Latin America, often enjoyed cold or poured over ice with a splash of milk.

Per 100 grams malta provides about 37 calories and roughly 8 grams of carbohydrate — and essentially all of that carbohydrate is sugar, at about 8 grams. There is very little protein, fat or sodium and only a trace of alcohol. People drink it by the bottle: a 12-ounce serving (about 360 grams) comes to roughly 133 calories and close to 29 grams of sugar.

Despite the wholesome "malt" image and the beer-like brewing, nutritionally malta behaves like a sweet soft drink — its calories are almost entirely sugar. It is a flavorful, alcohol-free alternative to beer for the taste, but it is best treated as a sweet treat rather than a low-sugar refreshment.
