About Chocolate syrup

Chocolate syrup is a thin, pourable sauce of cocoa, sugar (or corn syrup), water and a little salt and flavoring. Unlike chocolate itself, it contains very little cocoa butter, so it is low in fat and stays fluid — made to be squeezed and stirred rather than eaten on its own.

At about 279 calories per 100 grams it is lighter than solid chocolate, but that is because it is essentially sweetened cocoa water: around 65 grams of carbohydrate per 100 grams, roughly 50 grams of it sugar, with only about 1 gram of fat. The cocoa carries a little fiber and some minerals, but the defining ingredient is sugar.

Chocolate syrup is used by the spoonful — stirred into milk, drizzled over ice cream and pancakes, or swirled into coffee. Because portions are small a typical serving adds modest calories, but it is a source of added sugar, so it is best used as a finishing touch rather than poured freely.
