About Pomegranate juice, bottled
The pomegranate is a round, leathery-skinned fruit packed with hundreds of juicy, ruby-red seeds called arils, each surrounding a tiny crunchy seed. Native to the region stretching from Iran to northern India, it has been cultivated since ancient times and appears as a symbol of abundance and fertility across many cultures. The sweet-tart arils are the edible part, ranging from tangy to candy-sweet depending on variety, with Wonderful the best-known type in American markets.
They are an excellent source of antioxidants, especially punicalagins and anthocyanins, along with vitamin C, vitamin K, potassium, and fiber, and the fruit comes into season through fall and winter. Arils are sprinkled over salads, yogurt, oatmeal, hummus, and roasted meats and vegetables, pressed into juice, or simmered into grenadine and the tangy syrup called pomegranate molasses used across Middle Eastern cooking.
To free the arils without a mess, score the fruit and tap the seeds out into a bowl of water, where the pith floats and the arils sink. Choose pomegranates that feel heavy for their size with firm, taut skin, store them whole in the refrigerator for a month or two, and freeze extra arils in a bag for later.
