About Papaya nectar, canned
Papaya (Carica papaya) is a sweet tropical fruit with smooth golden-orange flesh, a soft, buttery texture, and a cluster of round black seeds in its hollow center. Mild and musky-sweet when ripe, it grows on a fast-growing, palm-like plant native to Central America and is now enjoyed across the tropics, with the small Hawaiian type and the large Mexican or Maradol type most common. Papaya is loaded with vitamin C, vitamin A, folate, potassium, and fiber, plus the enzyme papain, which aids digestion and is used to tenderize meat.
It is eaten fresh with a squeeze of lime, blended into smoothies and juices, tossed green and unripe into the famous Thai som tum salad, and even the peppery seeds are edible ground as a garnish. Choose papaya that gives slightly to gentle pressure and smells fragrant and sweet at the stem end; ripen firm fruit on the counter, then refrigerate once ripe, and scoop out the seeds before enjoying the flesh.
A squeeze of citrus brightens its gentle, musky sweetness.
