About Energy Drink, Monster

Monster is a sweetened, caffeinated energy drink sold mainly in large 16-ounce cans. Alongside carbonated water, sugar and flavorings it carries added caffeine plus a blend of B vitamins and other ingredients marketed for energy.

Per 100 grams it provides about 42 calories and 11.25 grams of carbohydrate, essentially all sugar, with about 75 milligrams of sodium and added vitamins B6 (0.83 mg) and B12 (2.5 micrograms). The standard 16-ounce can is the figure that matters: it works out to roughly 205 calories and about 55 grams of sugar — close to 14 teaspoons — plus a heavy caffeine dose typical of energy drinks.

The combination of a large serving size, high sugar and a heavy caffeine load is what sets energy drinks apart from ordinary soda. A single big can can supply more sugar than is wise in a day along with a lot of caffeine at once, so these drinks are not recommended for children or teenagers and are best limited by adults. A sugar-free version cuts the sugar but keeps the caffeine.
