About Macaroni, cooked, enriched
Macaroni is the small, curved, tube-shaped pasta best known as the heart of macaroni cheese. Made from wheat and water like other pasta, it cooks quickly and its hollow shape traps sauce, which is much of why it's such a comfort-food favorite.
On its own, cooked macaroni is mostly carbohydrate for energy, with some protein from the wheat and, when enriched, added B vitamins and iron. Having absorbed water as it boils, the cooked figures are far lighter than the dry pasta. Wholewheat versions add useful fiber.
Like all pasta, it's the sauce and the portion that decide how light or rich a bowl of macaroni turns out — the pasta itself being a mild, satisfying base.
