About Falafel

Falafel are crisp, deep-fried fritters of ground chickpeas (or fava beans) blended with herbs, garlic and warm spices like cumin and coriander. A cornerstone of Middle Eastern street food, they are stuffed into pita with salad and tahini, or served as part of a mezze spread.

At their heart, falafel are a nutritious, plant-based protein: the chickpeas supply protein, fiber, iron and folate. But they are deep-fried, which soaks in oil and pushes the calories up to around 514 per 100 grams — a reminder that the cooking method, not the chickpea, drives the richness here.

Baked rather than fried, falafel become a much lighter, genuinely wholesome food while keeping their herby, spiced character. Even fried, paired with plenty of salad and a yogurt or tahini sauce, they make a flavorful, satisfying plant-based meal.
