About Acerola juice, raw
Acerola (Malpighia emarginata), also called the Barbados cherry or West Indian cherry, is a small, bright red tropical fruit that looks much like a cherry and grows on a shrubby tree native to the Americas, now cultivated heavily in Brazil and the Caribbean. The juicy, three-lobed fruit has a mildly sweet-tart flavor and is celebrated above all for being one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C on earth, packing many times more than an orange, along with vitamin A, antioxidants, and beneficial plant compounds for very few calories.
Because ripe acerola is so delicate that it spoils within days of picking, it is rarely shipped fresh and is instead widely sold as juice, frozen pulp, and vitamin C powder, capsules, and supplements. Where it grows, fresh acerola is eaten out of hand and blended into juices, jams, smoothies, and desserts, where its bright tartness shines. Choose deeply colored, slightly soft fruit, use it quickly before it fades, and freeze the pulp to lock in its abundant vitamin C for later.
