About Seaweed, spirulina, raw

Spirulina is a blue-green algae, a spiral-shaped cyanobacterium grown in warm, alkaline freshwater and dried into a deep green-blue powder, flake, or tablet used as a concentrated dietary supplement and natural food coloring. Once harvested from lakes by the Aztecs and in Africa, it is now farmed worldwide. Spirulina has an earthy, slightly briny, ocean-like taste and is remarkably nutrient-dense: it is exceptionally high in complete plant protein, providing all essential amino acids, along with iron, B vitamins, copper, and antioxidant pigments like phycocyanin, which gives it its vivid color.

A small daily spoonful is typically stirred into smoothies, juices, and protein shakes, blended into energy balls and bowls, or taken as tablets, and it tints foods a striking blue-green. Its strong flavor is best masked with fruit. Buy from a reputable source to avoid contamination, and store spirulina in an airtight container away from heat, light, and moisture.
