About Fish oil, cod liver

Cod liver oil is one of the oldest supplements there is — a golden oil pressed from the livers of cod, taken by generations of children by the spoonful and not always fondly remembered for its taste. What sets it apart from ordinary fish oil is where it comes from: the liver, which concentrates fat-soluble vitamins.

That gives it an unusual nutritional punch. Cod liver oil is exceptionally rich in vitamin D and vitamin A, alongside the long-chain omega-3 fats EPA and DHA linked to heart and brain health. Like any pure oil it's almost entirely fat and very energy-dense, at around 900 calories per 100 grams — but it's measured in teaspoons, not servings.

Because of its high vitamin A and D content it's genuinely possible to take too much, so cod liver oil is best treated as the concentrated supplement it is rather than an everyday oil.
