About Longans, dried

The longan (Dimocarpus longan), whose name means dragon eye, is a small, round subtropical fruit in the soapberry family and a close cousin of the lychee and rambutan. It grows in hanging clusters on evergreen trees native to southern Asia, and today China, Thailand, and Vietnam are the leading producers. Beneath its thin, tan, leathery shell lies translucent, juicy white flesh wrapped around a single glossy dark seed, an arrangement that, once peeled, really does resemble an eyeball.

The flesh is sweet, floral, and refreshing, a little muskier and less perfumed than lychee. Longans supply vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants for modest calories, and are enjoyed fresh, in fruit salads, and in Asian desserts, drinks, and soups, while dried longans turn dark and chewy for sweet teas, congee, and traditional tonics. Canned longans in syrup are widely sold as well. Crack the brittle shell with your fingers, slip out the flesh, and discard the inedible seed.

Choose heavy, unblemished fruit with intact shells, and store fresh longans in the refrigerator, enjoying them within a few days, since they do not keep long once picked.
