About Longans, raw

The longan — its name means dragon eye — is a small round fruit with thin tan skin, translucent juicy flesh and a single dark seed at the center that gives it its evocative name. A close cousin of the lychee, it has a sweet, musky, slightly floral flavor, a little less perfumed than its more famous relative.

At about 60 calories per 100 grams it is moderate among fruits, and it is exceptionally rich in vitamin C, with potassium and small amounts of other minerals. It grows in grape-like clusters across Southeast Asia and southern China, where it is a beloved warm-weather treat.

Longans are usually eaten fresh — peeled and popped from the skin like a lychee — and are also widely sold dried or canned in syrup, and simmered into sweet soups and desserts in Chinese cooking. As with lychee, the seed is not eaten.
