About Boysenberries, frozen, unsweetened
The boysenberry is a large, richly flavored bramble fruit created by crossing raspberry, blackberry, and loganberry, combining the best of all three. Developed in early twentieth-century California and made famous by Knott's Berry Farm, it is a big, plump aggregate berry with a deep maroon-purple color and a sweet-tart, complex, almost wine-like flavor. Soft and juicy with a tender texture and noticeable seeds, boysenberries are wonderful eaten fresh but are especially beloved cooked, where their flavor deepens into outstanding jams, jellies, pies, cobblers, syrups, and ice cream.
Like other dark berries, they are a good source of fiber, vitamin C, folate, and antioxidant anthocyanins while staying low in calories. Because the ripe fruit is fragile and does not ship or store well, boysenberries are often found frozen, canned, or as preserves rather than fresh at the market. Their soft texture means they should be handled gently. Choose plump, deep-colored, fragrant berries with no mold, and refrigerate them right away in a single layer, using them within a day or two or freezing them for later.
