About Alcoholic beverage, wine, dessert, sweet
Sweet dessert wines are the after-dinner bottles — port, sherry, sweet sherry, late-harvest and fortified wines like these. They differ from ordinary table wine in two ways: more residual sugar is left in (or added back), and many are fortified with extra spirit, pushing the alcohol up to around 15% by volume or higher. The result is a richer, sweeter, more potent glass meant to be sipped slowly.
Per 100 grams sweet dessert wine provides about 160 calories, roughly 13.7 grams of carbohydrate of which around 7.8 grams is sugar, and about 15.3 grams of alcohol, plus a little potassium and iron. Because it is both sweeter and stronger than table wine, it is poured in much smaller measures — a typical 3-ounce serving (about 90 grams) comes to roughly 144 calories, 7 grams of sugar and close to 14 grams of alcohol.
So compared with a standard glass of dry table wine, a dessert wine packs more sugar and more alcohol into less liquid, which is exactly why the pours are small. It is a treat to finish a meal rather than an everyday drink, and like all wine it counts toward alcohol intake — moderation applies, and it is best avoided during pregnancy.
