About Alcoholic beverage, wine, table, red
Red wine is made by fermenting dark-skinned grapes with their skins, which is what gives it both its color and its tannins. From light, fruity styles to bold, full-bodied ones, it's a drink as bound up with food and culture as any.
Most of its calories come from alcohol, with a little from residual sugar, and it carries antioxidant compounds from the grape skins — including resveratrol, the focus of much excited (and often overstated) research. Those antioxidants don't change the fact that the alcohol is the dominant feature.
The old idea that red wine is 'good for the heart' has been steadily walked back; current guidance is that no amount of alcohol is actively beneficial. Enjoyed in moderation and within recommended limits, it's a pleasure best kept to that.
