About Loganberries, frozen

The loganberry (Rubus x loganobaccus) is a dark red-purple cane berry, a chance hybrid of the blackberry and the red raspberry first raised in 19th-century California. Larger and longer than either parent, it leans toward the blackberry in look and aroma but carries the bright tartness of the raspberry, giving it a rich, full, sweet-sour flavor that intensifies as it ripens to deep wine-red. Loganberries are a good source of vitamin C, fiber, manganese, and anthocyanin antioxidants.

Because the soft berries are tart and fragile and do not ship well, they are most often cooked, making outstanding pies, crumbles, jams, jellies, syrups, and fruit wines and cordials, though fully ripe ones are also lovely fresh with cream or in smoothies. They freeze well for later baking. Choose plump, deeply colored, glossy berries, handle them gently, and store loganberries unwashed in the refrigerator and use them quickly, or freeze them.
