About Pitanga, (surinam-cherry), raw

Pitanga, also known as the Surinam cherry or Brazilian cherry, is a striking little tropical fruit native to the east coast of South America. Instantly recognizable by its deeply ribbed, pumpkin-like shape, it ripens from green through orange and scarlet to a deep, glossy crimson or near-black, growing sweeter and less resinous the darker it gets. The flavor is bright and complex, a mix of sweet and tart with a hint of pleasant resinous spice.

Pitanga is rich in vitamin C and vitamin A along with antioxidants that give the fruit its vivid color. It is eaten fresh out of hand when fully ripe, and it makes excellent juice, jam, jelly, and sorbet, and even flavors sauces and drinks. For the best flavor, let the fruit ripen until it is dark and yields to gentle pressure, since underripe pitanga can taste sharp and turpentine-like. Grown widely as an ornamental hedge in warm climates, it rewards the patient with a truly unique tropical treat straight from the garden.
