About Sapodilla, raw

Sapodilla is a small brown tropical fruit with sandy-brown skin and soft, grainy, amber flesh whose flavor is often likened to brown sugar, malt or a pear soaked in caramel. Native to southern Mexico and Central America, it must be fully ripe to enjoy — unripe fruit is mouth-puckeringly astringent.

It is fairly energy-dense for a fruit at around 83 calories per 100 grams, owing to its high natural sugar content, and it provides a good amount of fiber along with vitamin C, copper and potassium. The tree it grows on, the sapodilla or chicle tree, was historically tapped for the latex that was the original base of chewing gum.

Ripe sapodilla is eaten fresh, scooped from the skin like a soft pear, with the hard black seeds removed and discarded. Its rich, sweet, malty flesh also blends well into smoothies, shakes and desserts.
