About Salmonberries, raw (Alaska Native)
The salmonberry is a wild coastal berry of the Pacific Northwest, ranging from Alaska down to California, where its bright fruit is one of the first to ripen each year. A vigorous member of the rose family related to raspberries and blackberries, it forms large thickets along streams and in moist forests beneath the red alders. The berries look like a large raspberry but glow yellow, orange, and salmon-red, which along with their traditional pairing with salmon roe is one explanation for the name.
Soft and juicy with a mild, slightly tart sweetness, they are best eaten fresh, since they are too delicate to ship well, though foragers also cook them into jams and stir them into pancakes. They provide vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants for very few calories. Indigenous peoples of the coast have long harvested both the berries and the tender young shoots. Pick salmonberries at their deepest color and eat them the same day, as they quickly turn soft.
