About Rhubarb, wild, leaves (Alaska Native)
Alaska wild rhubarb (Aconogonon alaskanum, part of the alpine knotweed group) is a tall foraged plant of the far north, unrelated to garden rhubarb but named for its thick, juicy, tart stalks. Common along Alaskan roadsides, meadows, and riverbanks, it has fed Native communities and modern foragers for generations, gathered in spring and early summer while the stems are young and tender. Peeled and chopped, the sour stalks are stewed with sugar into sauces, jams, pies, and drinks much as you would use true rhubarb.
The stalks offer vitamin C and a bright, mouth-puckering acidity that livens up sweet dishes. As with any wild edible, confident identification matters, and it's best harvested from clean ground away from roadside spray. Gather the youngest stalks, since older ones turn tough and stringy, and cook them down with plenty of sweetener to balance the tang. It's a beloved taste of the short Alaskan summer.
