About Cloudberries, raw (Alaska Native)

The cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus) is a rare, amber-colored berry that grows low to the ground across the cold bogs and tundra of Scandinavia, Russia, and northern North America. Resembling a golden raspberry, it ripens from hard and red to a soft, glowing orange and carries a unique tart-sweet flavor often described as a mix of raspberry and baked apple with a honeyed note. Because cloudberries are difficult to cultivate and must mostly be foraged in the wild, they are a treasured and pricey delicacy in Nordic countries.

They are exceptionally rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. The berries are made into jams, the Scandinavian cloudberry preserve served with cheese and desserts, liqueurs, and sauces, and they top waffles and ice cream. Their high benzoic acid content helps them keep well. Enjoy fresh cloudberries quickly, keeping them chilled, or freeze them to savor later.
