About Hibiscus tea

Hibiscus tea is a vibrant, ruby-red herbal infusion made by steeping the dried calyces of the roselle flower (Hibiscus sabdariffa) in hot or cold water. Enjoyed around the world under many names, it is called agua de Jamaica in Mexico, karkade in Egypt and Sudan, and bissap in West Africa. The brew has a bright, tart, cranberry-like flavor and a striking crimson color, and it is delicious served hot or poured over ice, usually sweetened to balance its natural sourness.

Naturally caffeine-free, hibiscus tea is rich in vitamin C and antioxidant anthocyanins and organic acids, and studies have looked at its potential to support healthy blood pressure. It is sipped as a refreshing everyday drink, blended into punches and cocktails, and used as a traditional herbal remedy. A longer steep deepens both its color and its tartness. Choose whole dried hibiscus calyces or quality tea bags, and store the dried flowers in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, where they keep their flavor for a long time.
