About Prairie Turnips, boiled (Northern Plains Indians)
The prairie turnip (Psoralea esculenta, also classified as Pediomelum esculentum) is a wild North American plant with a starchy, edible tuberous root that was one of the most important foods of the Plains Indians. Known by many names, including tipsin, timpsula, breadroot, and pomme blanche, it was dug from the prairies and dry woodlands of the central plains, then eaten fresh, roasted, or dried and ground into a storable flour for winter.
The peeled root has a mild, sweet, nutty taste somewhere between a turnip and a chestnut, and it is naturally rich in starch, protein, and fiber. Traditionally the dried tubers were braided by their tough stems and hung for later use, or pounded into meal for soups and cakes. Two related breadroots were also gathered, the little breadroot and the silverleaf scurf pea, though the latter mainly in times of scarcity.
Today the prairie turnip remains a cultural food among Plains tribes and a favorite of wild-food foragers who dig it in early summer.
