About Alcoholic beverage, rice (sake)

Sake is the traditional Japanese rice wine, made by fermenting polished rice with water and a special mold called koji. Despite the "wine" label it is brewed more like beer, yet it ends up stronger than most grape wine — usually around 16% alcohol by volume. It is served warmed or chilled depending on the style, in small cups, and is clear with a clean, slightly sweet, faintly nutty taste.

Per 100 grams sake provides about 134 calories, roughly 5 grams of carbohydrate, half a gram of protein and about 16 grams of alcohol, with only traces of minerals and no fat or fiber. It carries more alcohol and calories than the same volume of beer, which is why it is poured in small measures — a 1.5-ounce cup (about 42 grams) comes to roughly 56 calories and just under 7 grams of alcohol.

Most of sake's calories come from its alcohol, with a little from the rice-derived carbohydrate. It is a genuine alcoholic drink and a relatively strong one by volume, so the small traditional cups are sensible — the usual guidance on drinking in moderation, and not during pregnancy, applies just as it does to wine or beer.
