About Spices, turmeric, ground
Turmeric is the vivid golden-orange spice ground from the root of a ginger relative — the color and earthy warmth behind curry powder, and increasingly a 'golden latte' on its own. Mild and slightly bitter, it stains everything it touches a cheerful yellow.
Used in small amounts, it isn't a notable source of calories or nutrients, but it owes its reputation to curcumin, the compound that gives it both its color and the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity it's so widely studied for. Curcumin is poorly absorbed on its own, which is why turmeric is traditionally paired with black pepper (whose piperine boosts its uptake) and a little fat.
A staple of South Asian cooking for centuries, turmeric brings color, earthiness and a much-discussed health halo — best enjoyed as part of a dish rather than relied on as a cure-all.
