About Oil, poppyseed

Poppy seeds are the tiny, slate-blue, kidney-shaped seeds of Papaver somniferum, valued as a nutty, faintly sweet baking ingredient and a crunchy garnish. Although they come from the same plant as opium, the harvested seeds carry only trace alkaloids and are entirely safe to eat. They freckle bagels, muffins, and dinner rolls, star in lemon-poppy seed cake, and, ground into a rich sweet paste, fill the strudels and rolls beloved across Central and Eastern Europe; they also add texture to salad dressings and noodle dishes.

For such small seeds they are genuinely nutritious, supplying healthy fats, plant protein, fiber, and minerals including calcium, manganese, and magnesium, though at about 525 calories per 100 grams they are energy-dense. A light toasting or a quick grind deepens their flavor considerably. Because their natural oils can turn rancid, store poppy seeds in an airtight container somewhere cool, or refrigerate them for longer keeping.
