About Mammy-apple, (mamey), raw

The mammee apple (Mammea americana), also called the mamey apple or Santo Domingo apricot, is a large, round tropical fruit native to the Caribbean and northern South America, with thick, rough brown skin. Despite its name it is not related to the apple, and it should not be confused with the mamey sapote. Beneath the leathery rind is firm, bright orange flesh with a sweet, aromatic flavor often compared to apricot and mango, surrounding one or more large seeds.

The mammee apple is a good source of vitamin C, vitamin A, fiber, and antioxidants. The flesh is eaten fresh out of hand, stewed with sugar, simmered into preserves and jams, and added to fruit salads and drinks, while the skin and seeds are discarded and the bitter membrane near the rind is trimmed away. Choose fragrant fruit that gives slightly to gentle pressure, and store ripe mammee apple in the refrigerator.
