About Litchis, dried

The lychee (Litchi chinensis) is a small, sweet tropical fruit with a bumpy red shell that peels away easily to reveal translucent, juicy white flesh wrapped around a single dark seed. Native to southern China, where it has been cultivated for over a thousand years, it offers a fragrant, floral, grape-like sweetness that has made it beloved across Asia and, increasingly, around the world. Lychees are low in calories and an excellent source of vitamin C, along with copper, potassium, and antioxidants.

They are enjoyed fresh out of hand, tossed into fruit salads, muddled into drinks and cocktails, and churned into sorbet, while canned lychees in light syrup are available year-round when fresh ones are out of season. Choose plump fruit with bright red, unbroken shells, avoiding any that look brown and cracked, and peel the skin just before eating while steering clear of the inedible seed. Store fresh lychees in the refrigerator, where they keep for about a week, or freeze them in the shell for a cool treat.
